How to insert species in the AviSys taxonomy
As an example of how to insert species in AviSys, here is how
to split Yellow-rumped Warbler four ways, into
- Myrtle Warbler
- Audubon's Warbler
- Black-fronted Warbler
- Goldman's Warbler
- Switch to World mode and search for Yellow-rumped Warbler so that it
is highlighted.
- It's useful, although not necessary, to click Options->Show Bird
Numbers so that you can see what numbers you are working with. This option
displays two numbers at the lower right of the screen; as of the 2024 taxonomy, for Yellow-rumped
Warbler they are 21029 and 10767. 21029 is the identification number for
the species, and is the same in both N.A. Mode and World Mode. 10767 is
the sequential position of the name in the list of taxa, counting both
species names and family names, and is different between World and N.A. Modes.
Looking at the next species, Yellow-throated Warbler, you see its number is
21031, so there is room to insert one species as number 21030 between
21029 and 21031.
- Begin by renaming Yellow-rumped Warbler to Myrtle Warbler (under
Edit->Edit Species).
- Insert the third species on the list, Black-fronted Warbler, like this: With
Myrtle Warbler highlighted, then click on Edit->Add Species. Enter the names and click OK.
Highlight the species and observe that it is assigned the number 21030.
You'll see below why we start with the third species instead of the second.
- Now you have
- 21029 Myrtle Warbler
- 21030 Black-fronted Warbler
- 21031 Yellow-throated Warbler
These numbers are consecutive, so there is no way to insert more numbers
for the two remaining species.
- Exit AviSys and run the Renumber.exe program, then restart AviSys. Remember that
you'll need to let AviSys rebuild its index and shut down, so you'll
actually restart AviSys twice.
- Again switch to World Mode and find Myrtle Warbler. Note that now you have
- 21029 Myrtle Warbler
- 21031 Black-fronted Warbler
- 21033 Yellow-throated Warbler
Now you have room to insert new species as 21030 and 21032.
There is space to insert a number both before and after Black-fronted Warbler, which is why we started with it.
If we had started with Audubon's Warbler, we'd only want to insert after it, and we'd have two more steps instead of one.
- Because we started with the third species instead of the second, now
we can do two insertions in one step.
After Myrtle Warbler, insert Audubon's Warbler. After Black-fronted
Warbler, insert Goldman's Warbler. Now you have
- 21029 Myrtle Warbler
- 21030 Audubon's Warbler
- 21031 Black-fronted Warbler
- 21032 Goldman's Warbler
- 21033 Yellow-throated Warbler
- You could stop here, or for numbering consistency you could run
Renumber one more time. If you do, then you'll have
- 21029 Myrtle Warbler
- 21031 Audubon's Warbler
- 21033 Black-fronted Warbler
- 21035 Goldman's Warbler
- 21037 Yellow-throated Warbler
- To complete the addition of Audubon's Warbler, you'll need to
add it to appropriate state checklists. Otherwise it will not show up in
N.A. Mode.
